Every child who aspires to pursue engineering after passing the 12th grade in India dreams of gaining admission to prestigious institutions like the IITs and NITs. These are the top-tier engineering schools in the country, established in the 1960s, and they are counted among the world’s finest institutions. These institutions offer outstanding research and academic facilities. However, securing a seat in these institutions is no easy feat, as it requires exceptional scores in the JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams. To put this complexity into perspective, consider that every year, an average of 11 to 12 lakh students appear for the JEE Main examination. Out of these, only 17,385 make it into the IITs and 23,954 into the NITs. This means that only 3.7% of students are successful.
For the 96% of students who do not cut, and their parents, the question of what to do next looms large. Wealthy students often opt for private engineering colleges, which can cost anywhere from 20 to 25 lakh rupees for a four-year B.Tech course. Middle-class and lower-middle-class students choose engineering colleges based on their financial capabilities. In South India and the Delhi-NCR region, there are numerous private engineering colleges to choose from.
The State’s Best College One of the most pressing issues is the lack of options for states like Bihar. Students here often face a stark choice between IIT-NIT and nothing. Bihar has very few good private and government engineering colleges. However, we’ll discuss a prominent engineering college in Bihar today, namely Bhagalpur Engineering College. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions in the state, and it plays a significant role in higher education in the region. Established in the 1960s, Bhagalpur Engineering College was one of Bihar’s most prestigious institutions. It operates under the Science and Technology Department of the Bihar government. The college offers a range of programs, including Civil, Computer Science, Electrical, Electronics and communication, and Mechanical Engineering, along with departments for Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Humanities.
Admission through JEE Main and GATE Earlier, admission to B.Tech programs at this prestigious college was through the Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board (BCECE). However, from 2019, admissions are based on JEE Main scores. For M.Tech programs, admission is based on GATE scores. Reports suggest that all the departments at the college maintain a good standard, but the competition for Computer Science is particularly intense. In 2021, the general category JEE Main cutoff for admission was around 86. In 2023, around 32,000 students with JEE Main rank close to 32,000 secured admission to this esteemed institution.
Salary Packages up to 30-40 Lakhs
Information about placements at this college has been buzzing on social media platforms. One student pursuing B.Tech from here shared that in the previous year, 80% to 100% of students in the Computer Science branch secured placements. However, the same level of success is not uniformly spread across other branches. According to this student, in Computer Science, the maximum package offered ranged from 30 Lakhs to a minimum of 5 Lakhs, with renowned companies like Wipro, TCS, and HCL being part of the recruitment process. Other students have even mentioned packages reaching up to 40 Lakhs.
According to the college’s website, this year has also seen outstanding placement records. Some students have reported receiving annual packages of 13-15 Lakhs. This indicates that Bhagalpur Engineering College is not only providing quality education but also opening up opportunities for its students to secure lucrative job offers, making it a prominent choice for aspiring engineers in Bihar.
