Panjab University Contemplates Reverting to Traditional Methods for Annual Convocation After PEC

Panjab University is considering changing its dress code for the upcoming convocation, transitioning from the traditional western robes to more authentically Indian clothing. This is being discussed as a possible way to celebrate the culture of the University while still maintaining a level of formality and respect. The decision has yet to be finalized, but if approved, the new attire could signify a major shift from what is generally accepted

Panjab University has formed a panel to discuss and decide on the new dress code for its upcoming convocation, which is considering the transition from the typical western robes to more traditional Indian attire. This decision follows the Punjab Engineering College Senate’s suggestion last year to graduates to wear traditional Indian clothing instead of their western robes for their convocation, as well as the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Mohali, who also made this switch for their convocation in January this year.

This move is supported by the University Grants Commission (UGC), who in 2019 recommended all universities to wear traditional attire during convocation ceremonies. The panel, headed by varsity senator Akhter Mahmood, are still in the process of deliberating and the final decision has yet to be made.

The varsity panel, headed by varsity senator Akhter Mahmood, is still undecided regarding the convocation dress code, despite numerous examples that they could draw from. According to a member of the committee who wished to remain anonymous, the members are divided on the matter, with some pushing for traditional attire and others against the change.

The committee will hold another meeting soon to continue their deliberation and reach a conclusion before issuing their recommendations. The university has yet to confirm the convocation date, though they are currently aiming for late April or early May.

After a two-year break due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Panjab University held its 69th annual convocation in May of last year, awarding around 1,100 PhD scholars with doctorate degrees. However, with the Covid-19 restrictions still in force in the city of Chandigarh, the varsity has yet to officially announce a date for the upcoming convocation ceremony
