NITs across the country collaborate with the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) to conduct separate counseling processes. Approximately half of the available seats are typically reserved for students from the respective state in which the NIT is located. The remaining seats are designated for candidates from other states who seek admission to NITs. In cases of open and unreserved seats, students from outside the state are required to achieve higher JEE Main ranks, emphasizing the competition for these coveted slots.

The JoSAA counseling process unfolds in multiple rounds each year, typically totaling around six rounds. During this process, the opening and closing ranks for various programs are determined, shaping the fate of many aspiring students. These ranks play a pivotal role in deciding who gains admission to the highly sought-after BTech in Computer Science and Engineering program at NIT Hamirpur.

In 2023, an intriguing shift was observed in the NIT Hamirpur cutoff for the “other state” category open seats. The cutoff rank dropped to 8774, marking a notable change from the previous years. In 2022, the cutoff stood at 6332, and in 2021, it was as low as 874. This fluctuation in cutoff ranks underscores the dynamic nature of admissions and the ever-evolving competition to secure a spot in this esteemed institution.

NIT Hamirpur was set up on August 7, 1986 as a Regional Engineering College, a joint and cooperative enterprise of the Indian government and Himachal Pradesh government. At the time of its inception, the institute had only two departments – Civil and Electrical Engineering –  having an intake of 30 students in each.
