Creating a Generation of Ranchos: IIT Madras Research Park’s Initiative to Foster Innovation and Empowerment

This summer, the IIT Madras Research Park (IIT-M RP) is buzzing with excitement as a dynamic group of 50 engineering students hailing from esteemed colleges across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Kerala come together. These starry-eyed students, currently in their 3rd and 4th years, bring a diverse range of perspectives and expertise to the innovation ecosystem.

Among the participating colleges are the Shri Vishnu Engineering College for Women in Bhimavaram, Andhra Pradesh, known for its commitment to empowering women in the field of engineering. The BV Raju Institute of Technology in Telangana, renowned for its focus on cutting-edge research and technological advancements, has also sent some of its talented students to join this exciting program.

The Thiagarajar College of Engineering in Tamil Nadu, recognized for its academic excellence and emphasis on innovation, has contributed its bright minds to the mix. Additionally, the Avinashilingam University for Women, another prestigious institution in Tamil Nadu, known for its dedication to empowering women through education, is represented among these enthusiastic students.

Together, these young talents have embarked on a transformative journey, collaborating closely with senior engineers, esteemed faculty members, and experienced mentors at IIT-M RP. The focus of their work revolves around developing technology-driven solutions that can create a profound social impact.

With the guidance and support of their mentors, these students are channeling their passion and technical skills into projects that tackle real-world challenges faced by communities. Their work spans a wide range of domains, including healthcare, education, sustainability, and more. Each student brings their unique perspective and expertise to the table, fostering a rich and collaborative environment for innovation.

The IIT Madras Research Park is abuzz with energy as these aspiring engineers dive deep into research, experimentation, and ideation, driven by a common goal of creating positive change through technology. The summer program at IIT-M RP promises to be a transformative experience, empowering these talented students to shape a better future and leaving an indelible mark on their academic and professional journeys.

In a remarkable endeavor, half of the student interns and approximately 20 mentors and experts from the IIT Madras Research Park have united their skills and knowledge to embark on an ambitious project: building an autonomous wheelchair that goes beyond conventional functionality. This groundbreaking initiative seeks to revolutionize the way individuals with different abilities interact with their environment.

The primary objective of this project is to create an autonomous wheelchair vehicle (AWCV) that not only assists users in mobility but also communicates with them in a language of their preference. Drawing inspiration from the character “Rancho” portrayed by Aamir Khan in the renowned film “3 Idiots,” IIT-M aims to instill a similar spirit of innovation and exploration in young college students throughout the country.

By merging the principles of universal design, voice technology, and natural language processing, the AWCV aims to break barriers and provide equal access and opportunities for individuals with diverse needs. The wheelchair is designed to accommodate users by offering a personalized experience as it acts as a virtual guide, offering guided tours and acting as a personal concierge.

As visitors enter the IIT Madras Research Park, the AWCV greets them with a virtual guide, capable of interacting in multiple languages such as English, Hindi, Tamil, and even Indian Sign Language for the hearing impaired. This inclusive approach ensures that individuals from various linguistic backgrounds can effortlessly engage with the vehicle. The AWCV takes visitors on informative and engaging tours, providing insights into the innovation ecosystem, the incubated companies, and the different centres of excellence within the research park.

Additionally, the AWCV utilizes its advanced navigation system to suggest routes that incorporate accessible ramps, ensuring the best possible experience for all users. By incorporating cutting-edge technology, the project exemplifies IIT-M’s commitment to pushing boundaries and fostering an environment of inclusivity and accessibility.

This unique project not only showcases the remarkable talent and ingenuity of the student interns but also highlights the collaborative efforts of the mentors and experts from IIT-M RP. Together, they strive to create a game-changing product that can positively impact the lives of individuals with diverse abilities, setting a precedent for innovation and social progress.
