IIT Kanpur’s Milestone: Filing Over 1,000 IPRs, Securing 400 Patents, and Achieving a 13.76% Technology Transfer Rate

IIT Kanpur’s Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Office is at the forefront of cultivating a dynamic culture of intellectual property (IP) generation within its academic community, involving both students and faculty members. Their tireless efforts in this regard have borne significant fruit, as highlighted by a recent press release from the esteemed institution.

In an impressive display of commitment to innovation, the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) proudly boasts a remarkable record of over 1,000 Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) filings and the successful granting of more than 400 IPRs. Alongside these accomplishments, the institute has also achieved an admirable technology translation rate of 13.76%, reflecting its dedication to transforming research into real-world applications.

Professor S. Ganesh, the Officiating Director of IIT Kanpur, lauds this monumental achievement as a testament to the unwavering dedication and relentless commitment of its world-class faculty, researchers, and innovators. The IPR Cell at IIT Kanpur, established in 2000, plays a vital role in facilitating patent filings and safeguarding the institution’s research and development efforts. This collaborative approach has contributed significantly to IIT Kanpur’s commendable milestones.

Beyond filing patents, IIT Kanpur has made substantial strides in technology commercialization and licensing. Notable innovations include the ‘Bhu Parikshak,’ a portable soil testing device that has been licensed to Agronxt Services Pvt. Ltd. This innovative tool has had a transformative impact, benefiting more than a million farmers in its first year of operation.

Other remarkable products, such as ‘Checko,’ an anti-counterfeiting solution, and a convertible school bag design, further showcase IIT Kanpur’s commitment to innovation and its contribution to society. These initiatives are a testament to the institution’s dedication to enhancing the lives of individuals and overcoming the prevailing challenges in India through technology transfer and commercialization.
