Engineer’s Day: Celebrating the Cheerful Backbone of India’s Economy

In a country where humour frequently takes root in the ordinary aspects of life, engineers in India have unwittingly become comic inspirations. As the nation readies itself to celebrate Engineers Day this Friday, the Deccan Chronicle takes a moment to reflect. Beyond the laughter-inducing anecdotes, lies a profound and indisputable need for engineers in the country’s overarching development and economic growth.

Esteemed educators hailing from prestigious institutions have offered their insights on this matter, underscoring the pivotal role that engineers occupy in the nation’s advancement.

Professor Sriram Venkatesh, the luminary principal of Osmania University College of Engineering, eloquently characterizes engineers as the torchbearers of the future. Their innovative thinking and formidable problem-solving abilities are the very engines driving the wheels of technological progress that continually mold our society.

“Indian engineers possess a remarkable knack for bridging the chasm that often separates theory from practicality. We are the instrumental architects of solutions to real-world challenges, the architects of innovation. Our endeavours touch the lives of everyone, from the toiling farmers and bustling industries to the boundless skies of aerospace. We traverse the spectrum, from humble bicycles to the dazzling realm of smartphones and the awe-inspiring domain of rockets,” proclaimed the distinguished recipient of the Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya Award 2021 and Engineer of the Year (2016).

Anant Rao M, a seasoned civil engineer with a remarkable track record spanning over two decades, asserts, “Engineering is not merely a profession; it’s a profound commitment to forging a better world. While the humour might poke fun at us, the undeniable truth lies in the contributions engineers make.”

Riya Narayanan, a spirited engineering student, shares that as a member of the academic fraternity, she draws inspiration from the formidable challenges that the profession offers.

“It’s more than just crunching numbers and solving equations; it’s about crafting solutions with the potential to transform lives. Those jokes don’t deter us; they serve as fuel to ignite our determination to showcase our true value,” she passionately affirms.

Addressing the pivotal role of nurturing future engineers, Koneru Lakshman Havish, the astute vice-president of KL Deemed to be University, emphasizes the need for young minds to recognize that engineering transcends being a mere academic discipline or profession—it’s a solemn commitment to shaping the destiny of our world.

“The significance of education lies in its capacity to nurture the upcoming generation of engineers. This odyssey of exploration and transformation holds the key to advancing our nation’s sustainable ecosystem. Engineering will forever be celebrated and revered for its role in bridging the chasm between imagination and realization,” he articulates with unwavering conviction.
