This is the cornerstone of successful drone videography. A well-thought-out plan ensures you capture the best possible footage while minimizing risks and uncertainties. Visit the location in advance to identify the best spots for takeoff and landing. Check for potential obstacles like trees, power lines, and buildings. Create a detailed shot list that outlines the types of shots you need (wide angles, close-ups, tracking shots, etc.) and the sequence in which you’ll capture them. Ensure the location is legally permissible for drone flights. Research local regulations, and if necessary, obtain the required permits. In Canada, for example, flying in controlled airspace requires coordination with Transport Canada and nearby airports.
Simple Angle Movements
Eye-Level to Higher Elevation: Keep your gimbal forward (or tilt it down slowly) while flying up from eye-level to get a simple establishing shot for any environment.
Gimbal Down to Up While Flying Forward: Start with your drone in the air (above 50 feet) then keep the gimbal down and fly forward slowly pushing the gimbal up to reveal your location. Just be aware of surroundings while doing the movement.
Gimbal Point Down While Flying Forward: Fly high up then start filming with your gimbal facing down and move forward in a straight line.
Right FPS
When choosing a suitable video frame rate, consider the type of video you are going to shoot and the atmosphere you want to create. It allows me to achieve a realistic blur effect when shooting landscape videos. I prefer to use this setting when working on cinematic projects. 30 FPS is suitable for situations when I need to shoot cinema-quality content while making my videos smooth.
