Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu established a 101-crore fund, the Mukhya Mantri Sukhashraya Sahayata Kosh, on Sunday to help poor children and impoverished women pursue higher education.

Sukhu said that each Congress MLA would pay one lakh rupees from their salaries to the fund. “We also want help from BJP parliamentarians,” he added, adding that financial assistance would be sought via corporate social responsibility and from donors.

“The state government would pay for recipients’ skill development, education, further education, and vocational training at engineering colleges, IIITs, NITs, IIMs, IT and polytechnic institutions, nursing and degree colleges.

They will also get financial help based on their needs in order to live a decent life, according to the CM.

“Assistance from the fund would be free from government constraints and no income certificate would be required to utilise it. “After receiving a simple application, the money would be instantly paid to recipients’ accounts by the department of social justice and empowerment,” he stated.

Sukhu said that the state government is devoted to the welfare of children, women, and elderly people and that a ‘500 festival’ award would be granted to inhabitants of child care facilities, nari seva sadans, shakti sadans, and old age homes.

Sukhu recalled an instance from his school and college days where he had an orphan buddy he used to accompany home on festivals. “Once I brought my buddy along and he informed me, ‘You are bringing me along but where I stay there are 40 more like me’. “That day, I realised that if I ever get authority, I should do something for orphans,” he stated.

The CM said that after taking the oath of office, he went to the Tutikandi Girl Child Care Institute to learn about their living circumstances. He also visited the Nari Seva Sadan and the Mashobra Old Age Ashram. Mukesh Agnihotri, the deputy chief minister, joined him, as did prominent party lawmakers Harshwardhan Chauhan, Jagat Singh Negi, Anirudh Singh, Sunder Thakur, and Sanjay Awasthi.
