Study Abroad: Tests and Formalities

1. SAT – Scholastic Assessment Test (Study Abroad Program)

The College Board of the USA conducts The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). It is one of the tests to take for admission overseas after high school. This foreign university entrance exam consists of three sections: reading, writing, and mathematics at the high school level. The SAT lasts 3 hours, and the optional essay section is 50 minutes. Applicants to undergraduate courses, particularly in the US and Canada, are required to take the SAT exam. SAT scores are also accepted by quite a number of universities in the UK. 2. ACT – American College Testing

American College Testing (ACT) is a test for college and university admissions for UG degrees in the United States (US). Indian students are very keen to join foreign universities using ACT scores. ACT assesses the academic readiness of students in college. It has been developed to evaluate the written, mathematical, verbal, and scientific skills of the candidates.  You can also opt to write an additional essay. This additional section will not impact the cumulative score of the ACT.

The total duration of the test is 2 hours and 55 minutes. You will have another 40 minutes for the optional essay section. You can repeat the test 12 times to perfect your scores. Depending on which college you are planning to apply for admissions, you can either write SAT or ACT. 3. GRE – Graduate Record Examinations

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is an examination among Indian students aspiring to study in the USA, Canada, and thousands of graduate and business schools around the world. It is a trending career path to pursue an MBA after engineering. For masters and Ph.D. students prefer foreign universities in India. This foreign university entrance exam has four sections: Analytical Writing, Quantitative Aptitude, Verbal Reasoning, and Integrated reasoning. There are no fixed dates for GMAT, and you can attempt to take it any time of the year. You can repeat it up to 5 times a year with a minimum of 16 days between two attempts. It measures the verbal, mathematical, and general analytical skills of the candidate. The fee for the examination is $ 275 (around Rs. 23,000). It is one of the highly recognized exams which may also be undertaken by many universities in the UK and Germany.

These standardized tests are crucial for assessing your readiness for college and your knowledge of specific subjects. How well you prepare for and perform on these exams can greatly affect your chances of getting accepted and receiving scholarships as well as admissions.
