Bengaluru: The increasing popularity of electric and hybrid vehicles has led to a surge in demand for qualified manpower in the field. As a result, several engineering colleges in Bengaluru are now offering short-term programmes and electives on electric vehicle (EV) technology.
RV College of Engineering, for example, has collaborated with major automobile brands like Morris Garages India and Mercedes Benz to offer advanced training programmes on EV technology. These programmes include modules on e-learning, awareness of high-voltage systems and measurements, practice on high-voltage cars, and simulation and modeling on HV test benches. The content is designed to prepare students for service engineer roles, as well as roles in manufacturing and research and development. With this upskilling, students can expect higher salary packages ranging from Rs 12-16 lakh per year.
Similarly, other universities like Dayanand Sagar University and PES University are also offering electives on electric and hybrid vehicles, covering topics such as design of electric motors and battery systems, and control systems for hybrid vehicles. Placements for these programmes have been reported to be good, indicating a growing demand for skilled manpower in the EV industry.
The need for talent in the EV industry is diverse and requires a range of skills, from engineering and design to manufacturing and research. Experts emphasize that the education system should adapt to this changing landscape not only at the college level but even in high schools, to meet the demand for skilled professionals and support the sustainable development goals of promoting EVs as a major solution for reducing carbon emissions in transportation.
Overall, the short-term programmes and electives offered by these engineering colleges in Bengaluru are aimed at equipping students with the necessary skills and knowledge to meet the growing demand for manpower in the EV industry, and contribute to the development of sustainable transportation solutions.
