The National Institute of Technology Calicut (NITC) is one of the premier engineering institutes in India. In recent years, NITC has been taking steps to emerge as a Multidisciplinary Education and Research University (MERU), as envisaged in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Some of the key initiatives that NITC has taken in this regard include:
- Revision of syllabi for various UG, PG and PhD programmes to make them more flexible and relevant to the needs of the industry.
- Introduction of a choice-based credit system that allows students to choose elective and skill-based courses.
- Launch of minor programmes in cutting-edge technologies such as Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Data Science.
- Establishment of 15 multidisciplinary centres with various themes aiming at holistic education focusing on different aspects of life.
- Greater focus on the welfare of students, faculty, and staff by introducing a set of holistic programmes that encompass physical fitness, mental health, emotional resilience, and social connectedness.
- Setting up of a Centre for Innovation that has helped NITC bag the 8th position in the Innovation Ranking among all technical and engineering institutions across India.
- Promotion of startups with the support of the Institute innovation council, TBI, and Centre for Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Incubation.
- Planning and funding of major infrastructure projects such as a new academic block and a new 33kV substation in the campus.
- Establishment of a robust system of counselling and guidance with trained counsellors and mentors.
- Signing of Memorandum of Understanding with prominent institutions such as Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education (LNCPE), Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (IMHANS), and Heartfulness Education Trust (HET).
These initiatives demonstrate NITC’s commitment to providing its students with a multidisciplinary education that will prepare them for the challenges of the 21st century. By embodying the spirit of NEP 2020, NITC is well-positioned to become a leading MERU in India.
In addition to the initiatives mentioned above, NITC is also taking steps to promote internationalization and research. The institute has signed MoUs with several international universities, and it is actively involved in research projects funded by the government and industry.
NITC is a vibrant and dynamic institution that is constantly evolving. The initiatives that it has taken in recent years are a testament to its commitment to providing its students with the best possible education. With its focus on multidisciplinary education, internationalization, and research, NITC is well-positioned to become a leading MERU in India.
NITC is an excellent example of an Indian institute that is embracing the spirit of NEP 2020. By implementing a multidisciplinary approach to education, NITC is preparing its students for the challenges of the 21st century. The institute is also committed to promoting internationalization and research, which will help it to become a leading MERU in India.
I believe that NITC is a shining example of what an Indian university can achieve when it is given the freedom to innovate and experiment. I am confident that NITC will continue to grow and thrive in the years to come.
