NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) marked its 64th Institute Day with great pomp and show on April 20, 2023. The excellence in teaching at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) was acknowledged and celebrated with great enthusiasm on 20th April 2023. Rupesh Nasre from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Nagabhushana Rao Vadlamani from the Department of Aerospace Engineering were jointly selected for the prestigious ‘Srimathi Marti Annapurna Gurunath Award for Excellence in Teaching’ for the academic year 2022-23.
This award holds great significance and is based on an endowment by IIT Madras alumnus, Marti Subrahmanyam, who is also a faculty member at Stern School of Business, New York University. The award recognizes the exceptional teaching skills of the professors who have made significant contributions to their respective fields and have imparted knowledge and skills to their students, thereby nurturing their growth and development.
The announcement of the ‘Srimathi Marti Annapurna Gurunath Award for Excellence in Teaching’ was a moment of pride for the entire IIT Madras community. The event witnessed the presence of distinguished alumnus and CEO of Zoho Corporation, Sridhar Vembu, as the chief guest, who addressed the students and faculty with great enthusiasm. Vembu spoke about the importance of building real-world systems and models that are representative of the real world. His address was highly motivating and left a profound impact on the audience.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the field of Aerospace Engineering, RI Sujith from the Department of Aerospace Engineering was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Research Award of IIT Madras. The award was accompanied by a grant of Rs 50 lakh, which Sujith is expected to operate as a project. In addition, he will be designated as ‘Institute Professor’ and invited to teach and mentor research scholars from various departments.
The Mid-Career Research and Development Award, which carries a grant of Rs 40 lakh, was presented to two professors from the departments of civil engineering and biotechnology. The award recognizes the significant contributions made by the professors in their respective fields and is expected to support their ongoing research projects.
In his presidential address, V Kamakoti, the director of IIT Madras, talked about the institute’s plans to set up 15 IoE centres of excellence in niche areas of research with a funding of Rs. 15 crore each. He also mentioned that around 20 IoE centres with a funding of Rs. 5 crore each and 15 IoE Projects with a funding of Rs. 2 crore will be supported. He further highlighted the importance of the IoE Grants from the Government of India in promoting interdisciplinary research and development in various fields.
The event also witnessed the formation of an All-India Research Scholars Team and the launch of the All India Research Fest 2023 in association with the IIT Madras Research Park. These initiatives are expected to promote research and development activities and provide a platform for scholars to showcase their skills and knowledge. Overall, the Institute Day celebration was a grand success, and it served as a testimony to IIT Madras’s commitment to academic excellence and research.
