Chandigarh University earns prestigious ABET accreditation for nine engineering courses

Chandigarh University (CU) has reached a remarkable milestone, securing prestigious accreditation for nine of its engineering programs from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). This achievement places CU at the forefront of private universities in India, boasting the highest number of ABET-accredited engineering courses.

The announcement came from CU Chancellor Satnam Singh Sandhu, who emphasized that this recognition underscores the university’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence. ABET, a globally recognized authority in accrediting engineering and engineering technology programs, signifies that an engineering program meets the rigorous standards set by the technical profession. This accreditation is not only a testament to CU’s educational quality but also significantly enhances students’ career prospects by aligning them with global standards.

ABET accreditation is often referred to as the ‘Gold Standard’ for engineering education. It signifies that a program adheres to the highest standards, equipping its graduates to excel in a competitive global workforce. Presently, only 10 universities and institutions in India have earned this prestigious recognition.

The nine engineering courses at CU that received ABET accreditation include Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and engineering, Computer Science and Engineering (with specialization), Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Mechatronics Engineering.

ABET accreditation carries immense significance for students, as it assures them that their educational experiences adhere to global standards. This, in turn, enhances their career prospects, especially as multinational corporations often require graduation from an accredited program.

Chancellor Satnam Singh Sandhu expressed his pride in CU’s dedication to excellence in teaching, learning, and research. He emphasized the pivotal role that educational institutions play in shaping individuals’ careers and lives. In a country with over 3,500 engineering colleges and universities, only a handful hold ABET accreditation. CU stands out as a leading institution, notably as a private university with the highest number of ABET-accredited engineering courses.

Sandhu also highlighted CU’s commitment to holistic development, indicating that the university’s curriculum is designed based on real-time inputs from industry experts and academic leaders, ensuring alignment with international academic standards. CU has garnered recognition from prestigious national and international organizations, such as ABET and AICTE.

In addition to this significant achievement, CU has also achieved recognition on the global stage. The university secured a place in the 771-780 band in the QS World University Rankings for 2024, making it one of only 45 universities to earn this distinction. CU now stands as the top-ranked private university in India and holds the 20th position among all public and private universities in the country. Furthermore, Chandigarh University has claimed the 27th rank in India’s top universities according to the NIRF Rankings for 2023.

CU’s remarkable journey in academia continues to set new benchmarks and exemplify excellence in higher education, shaping the future of aspiring engineers and professionals on a global scale.
