Despite the recent layoffs in the IT industry and concerns over a potential global recession, several professional colleges in Ernakulam are reporting strong campus placements, similar to previous years. Authorities are noting that many companies, particularly in the IT sector, are still recruiting students with high-paying job offers. However, mass-hiring has reportedly decreased, likely due to pending projects and delays in securing new projects.
Although some colleges experienced a declining trend in campus placements earlier in November, the pace eventually picked up, with authorities expecting the current trend to continue. Computer Science, IT, and related fields remain at the top of the list for job placements.
One standout performer is Cusat in Kalamasserry, where 640 final-year students from various courses secured jobs at over 150 companies this year. The number of companies recruiting students from Cusat with higher pay packages has also increased compared to previous years, with the highest pay of the season reaching Rs 25 lakh per annum, and the average pay package at Rs 6.5 lakh. In addition, many students landed internships at major international companies, with nine students securing internships with a stipend of Rs 98,000/month.
Similarly, Fisat reported a significant increase in placements this year, with 923 students securing jobs, twice the number of placements from the previous year. Around 40% of students are from the Computer Science stream, followed by Electrical and Electronics and Communication.
The placement officials of many colleges noted that companies have raised the recruitment benchmark, resulting in tougher placement interviews and tests, likely due to concerns over the recession. However, college authorities have reported an increase in average salary packages, a positive sign of growth in the industry.
Overall, while some companies may be hesitant to hire in large numbers due to the threat of a recession, high-performing students still have excellent chances of securing jobs in the industry. Nevertheless, teachers fear that if the trend of higher recruitment benchmarks continues, companies may lower salary packages compared to previous years.
