As we approach the crucial stage of Engineering, there comes a mental thought of inferiority. This is due to the factors involving, peer pressure, competition, lack of skills and grades, ongoing recessions, and lower intakes. It is totally natural for any person to get such thoughts at this stage. As you are entering your final year, let us look at how the placements system works, provided let us also find what one needs to do to emerge with flying colors.
Given below is a detailed summary of the entire placement process, considering a top private university for reference.
Working of Campus Placements
The Campus Placements generally get to peak during the mid-7th semester. That is when students are tested on their technical skills and, intrapersonal skills would play a pivotal role.
The tech giants always prioritize themselves to get listed first. By doing this, it becomes easy for the companies to get a variety of roses before it is picked. Google, Paytm, Amazon, and Microsoft usually visit Tier-1 and Tier-2 colleges at the start of 7th semester. This is when highly skilled candidates get placed at the very initial stage. Such students are given the offer letter and are asked to intern for a year at their organizations.
Then comes IT core and service companies like Mphasis, Caterpillar, SAP, etc. These companies prioritize medium intakes close to around 15-20 candidates. An average student with decent skills and projects can easily clear interviews and secure internships at these companies.
Lastly, we have our core departmental companies like Schneider, IFB for electrical, Royal Enfield for Mechanical branches, etc. Then comes the mass recruiting companies like TCS, CTS, Cognizant, and various startups. This is when most of the candidates are swept at the end of the 8th semester and are trained at the office.

Initially, students are classified based on their branches and grades obtained so far. Then based on the criteria, students will be shortlisted to give a written test online.
The test majorly consists of questions from aptitude and English along with two coding questions. Based on individual scores, we will filter the candidates again and call them for a technical interview, which takes place physically. In this round, we will ask you about the projects or skills mentioned in your resume. Therefore it is very important to only mention what you are confident in in the biodata.
After this, candidates will participate in a group discussion round, followed by a final HR round that includes general questions about them.
